Airport Security Research Paper - 1462 Words

Many years ago airport security was not even an issue. People felt secure and safe and rarely worried about being searched. As time went on, the prevealance of terrorism became an increasing issue. There began more acts of terrorism by threatening and holding hostages on board commercial planes. As these acts continued, the government as well as citizens became vulnerable and an airport safety procedure was implemented as a way to ensure the safety of the United States. The implemented procedures over the years included a check and scan of all carry on and checked baggage, body scans, hire government airport employees, and a strict list of carry-on items. This made travelers feel safer as it decreased the ability of terrorist to commit†¦show more content†¦Thirty years ago, a man named Martin Annis invented a fully-body X-ray scanner (Nickisch). After 9/11 and a few terrorist’s attacks, airports finally became interested in this scanner. The person behind the push for heightened security is Michael Chertoff, the head of the Department Homeland Security (Nickisch). Today he is the cofounder of the Chertoff group, which is a risk management and security consulting company and is one of the biggest manufactures of body imaging screening machines (Nickisch). Michael Chertoff represents some of the manufactures that make this technology. So perhaps his interests in body scanners and security is not just about protecting the American people. He seems to be abusing his relationship with the public by pretending to be a public servant and how these scanners are going to make us safer. He stands to benefit because he is getting paid by the manufacturing companies to go all over the television network saying these scanners are the solution to security. Flying now is even more bothersome then ever before with the new procedures after 9/11. These body scanners became nicknamed â€Å"Nude-o-scopes† for the intrusive naked pictures they create. These b ody scanners see through clothes but not through the body itself, leaving the possibility for some to hidemalicious items internally. I am sure there are ways around this system to try and detonate bombs during the flights.
